"Tourists" proves you can get first-published on tor.com
I'm on the tor.com mailing list, so I get e-mail weekly about new stories on the site. The quality of the stories there has been pretty high. I liked this one, Tourists, quite a lot. I thought it did a good job of describing a novel situation with great images in a few words, and built up emotional tension nicely. It sort of juxtaposes aliens with the alienation of trying to understand other people. That's good work for 5000 words.

I read the Home Despot story that the Tourists author linked to in his blog. That was very entertaining.
