100 days of daily creative writing

I'm always either writing every day or trying to write every day. I'm always in the middle of some self-motivation scheme to get me to write pretty much daily. At various times in my life it's worked better or worse.

But not writing hasn't done me any good, so I always return to the writing. :)

Of late, I've been doing pretty well. Today is the one hundredth consecutive day where I've worked on my creative writing.

I'm not where I'd like to be. I wanted to be farther along on my novel by now. But at the same time, I'm exactly where I hoped to be: working daily on a novel, and also working on short story projects, and I have several stories in the mail right now.

This is eternally the way of it: things seem to take a long time, but if you work on them steadily, you can look around one day and find you've made great progress.

So yea me!

  1. Congrats on your 100 (101?) consecutive days of writing work!

Resolutions are definitely good. Also good is being able to adjust resolutions as needed / having the occasional "amnesty" time (like libraries do with fines).

Indeed, steady is the way to go, even if it at times feels slow.

  2. I've been writing a lot lately as well, but so much of it has been for various web related things, mostly dealing with characters, settings, or plot outlines for superhero, science fiction, and fantasy material, that I can't say I've done any serious STORY work in about 10 days, which feels like a very long time.

On the one hand, I'm not getting any closer to getting anything published. On the other hand, I've been feeling pretty good and doing a lot of creative work in addition to losing some weight via exercise and doing work around the house.

I'm kind of at a stage where I'm not sure how much I want to get stories published versus simply wanting to vent the creative thoughts that bubble up in my brain.

Right now I'm sort of riding the waves of ideas as they come (first a bunch of sci-fi ideas, lately a ton of superhero/alternate history stuff) to me. In the sense of honing a storytelling writing craft it is an undisciplined approach but it feels liberating.

  3. Oh, wait, in my self-centered rambling I completely forgot: WAY TO GO AARON!

I am really proud of you and I truly believe that you will get a novel published some day with your dedication (and an assist from some vital manuscript review comments from yours truly, of course :-). And I'll buy two! At retail! (wow, it kind of hurts to write that retail part)

  4. Congratulations! What time of day do you usually write? Before bed? First thing in the morning? Middle of the night? Have you made any discoveries about your writing in the 100 days?

  5. Discoveries...well, I can always come up with something if I sit there long enough.
