I took a photo of this art in the Austin Bergstrom airport because it looked like a spaceship. I didn't quite know what it was about, though, until I bumped into
this article on the city website, which explained that yes, this really is meant to be a spaceship...but a spaceship made from photos of Austin landmarks.
Huh. And here I thought the artist was just playing off the imagery used by H.R. Giger in Alien.
ReplyDeleteNot sure why I'd want a spaceship that looked like a mashed up city. Does remind me of James Blish's rather crazy "Cities in Flight" series where they attached spindizzy engines to cities and floated 'em right into space and out into the galaxy to explore.

I'm sitting near that art piece right now. It appears to be inspired by the artwork of John Berkey. His starship paintings graced so many scifi paperback covers in the 1970s. And I believe he did posters for Star Wars and Star Trek: TMP.
ReplyDeleteAnd now I want to get an art book of John Berkey. I'll check the library for that. Hope you don't have to wait too long in the airport.
